Trip to California....

Got back from our CA trip last Sunday. We had a BLAST!! Went to the Ellen Degeneres show (she is HILARIOUS and SO nice)....went to Magic Mountain, The Aquarium of the Pacific, saw the set of The Office, and did a lot of sightseeing. Very fun trip!! Thanks Paul and Lacy for going with us...even if we did have to drive a PT cruiser.

Finally....

Durable....

We have spent the past 36 hours packing, cleaning and moving (with a little bit of sleep mixed in for sanity reasons). We were bringing a load of stuff from our apartment and had one of those big exercise balls in the back of the truck. Now it was wedged in between all sorts of boxes and other priceless trinkets that for some reason we can't live without and so we figured it would be fine making the trip. We also took the side streets instead of the freeway for added precautions. We had made it all the way from our apartment to Higley Road (about 10 miles) with no problems. We kept an eye on the back and everything seemed fine. As we crossed over the freeway the ball decided to break free and flew out of the back of the truck where it proceeded to get hit by a car, bounce across the street, get hit by another car, bounce back across the street, get hit one last time and then roll down the street after us. We pulled over, Andy got out and ran up the street a little ways to catch the ball as it rolled towards us. Andy put it in the backseat so it wouldn't try to make another break for it. We got it home still in tact without so much as even a road rash.

Home Renovation Project #1

We got this bookcase from my parents and after having it in our office for 5 years we decided to give it a little makeover. Andy was glad to finally have a bookcase that wasn't "a weird pink color". I tried to explain that it wasn't pink...it was maroon...but that didn't work too well.
We picked black paint....but after putting on the first coat we have come to realize that the paint mixer guy at Wal-mart was either blind...or bored because it's not really black. Oh well....it's starting to look good and its no longer maroon, which is what matters to Andy.
























***side note: I don't think he actually ever even noticed the color until I had him move it out of the room. He has never commented on it before and we've had it since we got married.***

16 Days Till Moving Day

16 days till the move and this is how I feel.

2000 shades of brown

We are trying to pick paint colors for our house and I had no idea how confusing this would be. I finally decided on colors for all 3 bathrooms and now I just need the kitchen and bedrooms. Mostly just the kitchen and master bedroom. I had a vision in my head of colors for the master...but you can't just say brown. There is chocolate, wild horse, blanket brown, chocolate sparkle (???), oakwood brown, winter cocoa, warm embrace, Spanish raisin...I could go on FOREVER. When people come to our house and say..."Oh nice color walls..." am I really going to say "Oh yes....I couldn't decide between Desert Echo and Tree Bark...so I finally went with Thick Chocolate. It's more brown than the other browns" ??????

I want to get a job where I get paid to come up with these ridiculous names for brown. I asked Andy which one he liked and he said, "Who cares?? They all look the same!!" I feel the same way! This is why I seriously admire my interior designer sister-in-law. She can actually see the difference! I can't get past the names they pick for paint colors...let alone getting around to actually picking one. I am a decorating moron. Help!!!

Quirks....

I was tagged by Trisha to list 6 of my "quirks". Aren't those really just endearing qualities? :)

1. I can't handle repetitive, clicking/tapping noise...like a clock...or something dripping while I am trying to sleep...however 99% of the time I fall asleep with the TV or music on and that doesn't bother me.

2. I am VERY particular in the way I like to fall asleep. I have to have a blanket or something covering me...but I tend to stick one foot out from beneath the covers because then I don't feel so claustrophobic.

3. I can watch the same show/movie or listen to the same song multiple times in a row. I think it drives Andy insane.

4. I have to have the TV or radio volume on an even number. If it's not I have to change it ( Wow...even as I type that I realize how BIZARRE that is.)

5. I get a little freaked out when people aren't as careful as I think they should be with things. For example...I have a slider phone and one day my brother was holding and it and kept sliding it open and closed....over and over again. I was getting all worried because I thought he would wear the "slider" out. Or when someone keeps powering on and off the camera for no reason, it makes me get all nervous (I am such a nerd).

6. My thought process. Andy teases me about this all the time. We'll be talking about something and all of a sudden I bring up something TOTALLY random and out of the blue (at least to him). To me it makes sense because the thing we were talking about made me think of something else which made me think of something else...and then the cycle continues until I arrive at the new topic that is completely different (Wow....I think my HS English teacher would die at the sight of that run-on sentence). It makes sense to me...in my head. It just makes Andy laugh.

Olympics....

I was sitting here tonight...bored...because Andy was at school and I was thinking about how bummed I was that the Olympics were over. Andy and I really got into watching them this year. We stayed up WAY too late every night watching and cheering. It's funny how for this short time these people, these amazing athletes become important to you. You WANT them to succeed...you're rooting them on every step of the way. We cheered them on like we knew them personally...like they were part of our family. There were so many great moments during these Olympics (as well as some not so great)....and it was just a pleasure to watch.



The opening ceremonies were amazing. I especially liked watching the US team march in because the flag carrier, Lopez Lomong has such an amazing story. I also cried when Yao Ming...the flag carrier for China marched in with the adorable 9 year old boy who survived an earthquake. 20 of his classmates died. He managed to escape the wreckage, but went back and saved two of his classmates. What courage for such a little person.


I have always been a huge gymnastics fan. I can still remember watching and cheering and crying when the US women won the gold medal in '96. I was fascinated by them. I am a huge fan of both Shawn Johnson and Nastia Liukin and was so excited to see them go 1..2... in the All-Around. I think that there was some unfairness in the judging of the gymnastics, but despite it all these girl did AMAZING!


Chelsie Memmel had her Olympics come to a crashing halt and she did all she could to help the US team....on a broken ankle. Amazing.

It was so sad that during a time that is supposed to be once in a lifetime there had to be tragedy. The mens volleyball team suffered a great loss and still was able to perform like champions.


Then of course there was Michael Phelps. Watching him swim was SO awesome. We watched this race with my family up in Flagstaff and we were all at the edge of our seats for this finish. We all jumped up screaming and cheering when it flashed that Michael had won. Thanks to my parent's DVR we were able to watch it many....many times and we still couldn't see how it was possible.

What I loved though was that even though there was a lot of focus around Michael Phelps and his 8 individual gold medals he was still able to be a team player. I remember hearing an interview where the interviewer asked the mens relay team how it felt to help Michael win another gold and he said "This wasn't about me....this is a team gold...it's as much their win as mine. I couldn't have done this with out them. This was a team thing." Spoken like a true winner if you ask me.


We watched a lot of sports that we had never watched before. We saw a lot of cycling and track and beach volleyball (that's for you dad :) ) We totally got caught up in the "Olympic Spirit" and look forward to London 2012!!

Finally...

So since the ripe old age of 5 my mother decided that I needed to take piano lessons. Practicing the piano was the source of many battles in our house while I was growing up (sorry Mom). As I kept playing I felt deep down that I actually enjoyed it, even though being the ornery teenager that I was...I kept fighting it. I played in the high school choirs and at church all the time. When I moved out of the house I kept playing. It was always my calling in church...I even took private lessons...and slowly but surely I was able to uncover my love for playing the piano. Well about 2 months ago...for the first time since I can remember I got released from playing in the piano in Relief Society. First time in FOREVER since that has been my calling and I was really sad about it. I called my mom that night and she said, "SEE...aren't you glad I made you stay with it."
I have really missed playing and even though I never had a piano of my own...getting to play once a week was nice for me. One day my mom called me up and said that a neighbor of theirs was moving to Idaho and was selling their piano. She asked if we'd want it. My mom and my old piano teacher went down and "test played" it and since I trust them whole-heartedly, when they said it was great...I said we'd take it. My parents stored it in their garage and when we went up last weekend we were finally able to bring it home. Right now it's sitting in Andy's parents entryway...since we don't have anyone we are close enough with to have to beg them to haul it up the stairs to our apartment and then back down in a month when we move. So for now...it sits...covered with a blanket...but in 1 month from tomorrow I will finally have a piano of my very own...in my own house...to play.

It was quite the adventure getting the piano from my parents house in Flagstaff...down the mountain...in a torrential downpour, but with some ingenious rope tying by my awesome dad and some very helpful neighbors and family in both Flagstaff and Mesa....it made a safe trip.

Happy Birthday to me....

My birthday was yesterday. I had to work...but one of my kids made me a bracelet. She even "wrapped" it. It was so cute. I wore it all day and she was so happy. I have a pretty good class, which in and of itself makes for a pretty good birthday. Other than a kid dumping sand on another kids head in the middle of class we have gotten through the first week without too much trouble.

Anyways, Andy gave me some really pretty flowers and Guitar Hero...which sadly we are now addicted too.
Andy's mom brought balloons to my classroom, which was great except for I had to spend 10 minutes explaining to 22 6-year olds why they weren't for them.


My best birthday present however was that we got a house!! This is like the 4th house we have put an offer on and we found out our offer was accepted yesterday! We close the 25th of September .

I love the rain!!

So I was sitting here working on my brothers wedding video and all of a sudden there is a huge clap of thunder and it started POURING rain! Andy was just outside like 5 minutes before that and there was nothing. I love when it rains! It is one of my absolute most favorite things in the world! We when were little the rain would collect down the hill from our house and we would go an play in it forever. About a year ago we had a huge rainstorm and Andy and I decided to be really cool and put on our emergency kit ponchos and go for a walk in this torrential downpour! Probably not a brilliant idea...and I know we looked stupid...but it was so fun! I tried to take a picture of the rain, but it didn't work and then the neighbor looked out his window at me since my flash kept going off. I did take a video, so you can hear it...but ignore my lame commentary!

For those of you that don't know who Brian Regan is...he is this really amazing stand-up comedian. He did a bit about people that write children's books making bank. I have thought this many, many times before. People get paid to write some crazy stuff. Don't get me wrong. Another one....

Ok, so here is another fabulous story to add to my previous stories about why men think that just because we are female we can't do simple things...like tell when the AC is broken or the brakes in the car need to be changed.

Last week I was driving up to Flagstaff and I stopped at the gas station by our house to put air in the tires. I pulled up to the machine and got the tire gage and started checking the air presssure and then proceeded to put air in the tires that were low. Meanwhile, I look up at this guy is walking across the parking lot towards me. He comes over to the car and asks..."What are you doing?"

I looked at him (mom said never talk to strangers :) ) and said, "I am putting air in my tires."

He looked really confused for some reason and then said...very seriously, "But....you're a girl."

WHAT IS THIS?!?! The 50's??? Seriously? And plus...what tipped him off on that one? I'm a girl. Glad he was able to tell. Genius....we live in a world of total genuises.

I just sort of smiled and said, "Yep..." and went back to my car. What do you say to that sort of thing? He wasn't an old man...maybe late 40's....early 50's. I got in my car and started laughing. What is it with these people? I guess I should feel special though. I am a girl and I can tell when my AC isn't working, when the brakes need fixed AND I can put air in my car tires. I can also dress and feed myself. Guess I should get an award. :) :) :)

What is it???

Okay...so I have now had 2 separate and recent incidences where I have tried to take care of something for our house/car and the people whose services I am trying to acquire must think I am a total idiot. I don't know if it's because I'm a girl (I thought as a society we were past most of that) or what....but it's quite interesting.

Scenario #1:

I noticed that the brakes on the car were going out and so I took the car into the shop to have them fix the brakes. I walked in and the guy at the counter asked what he could do for me. I said, "Well...the brakes are going out and I need to get them replaced." He looked at me for a long moment and then said, "Well what makes you think that they are going out?" This whole time he is looking at me like I am just a bug he would like to step on. I said, "Well...my first clue was that when I push on the brakes...the car doesn't slow down."

He then proceeds to scratch his head and continue to look at me disgustedly. So I continued, "Also...when I tap on them they make a loud grinding sound. That can't be good can it?"

His response: "Hmmm...well it sounds to me like your brakes might be going out."

In my head I was thinking..."No crap Sherlock...you think so?"...but I was nice and said, "Yeah...that must be it."

He then proceeded to fix my car and I was on my way.

Scenario #2:

Living on the surface of the sun makes us very grateful for our air conditioning. However, I think that we do take it for granted. Tuesday night, I decided to cook (hold applause please) and thus had to use the oven. Now when we use the oven it does make our house a little warm...but no big deal. 2 hours later however, we noticed that it was still very warm and getting warmer. The air conditioning was on...but at this point it was just blowing hot air. Andy went and bought an air filter since ours was clogged...thinking that might fix it. It did not. Then at 11:30 PM we couldn't take it anymore so Andy went back to Wal-Mart to buy a fan. That helped a little, but when your house is full of hot air all the fan does is blow the hot air around. Andy called the office first thing in the morning and they said they would have someone out ASAP to look at it. The maintenance man came at 9:00 AM and knocked on the door. I answered it and he said, "I heard your air was broken."

Sara: "Yes, it is."

MM (Maintenance Man): What makes you think that it is broken?

Sara: Well...it's not working. It's been blowing hot air since last night...and it's pretty hot in here.

MM: (Steps inside) It is pretty warm....and you think your air conditioner is broken?

Sara: That's my best guess.

MM: Hmmm....you know what. It is really hot in here. I think your air might not be working the right way.

Sara: (In my head)...By George...I think he's got it.

Honestly...did I not say that already? Oh well....that one made me laugh. It was like a really bad comedy act of Who's on First or something. Eventually (8 hours later...but who's counting)...he came back and our air is now fixed.

5 Year Anniversary

Andy and I celebrated our 5 year anniversary on Friday. I can't believe that we've been married for 5 years! Makes me feel so old. We definitely feel like the old married people in our ward. When we say we've been married 5 years we get some interesting looks. Not sure why...but oh well. We had a good weekend. We went to Tucson. Andy's sister has a timeshare there and so we got a night there in exchange for babysitting our niece and nephews the next day. We went all out Friday night with dinner from the Safeway deli and a movie. Not exactly high class....but that's what I love about being married to Andy. We can do anything together and we still have a blast doing it.

This is a rambling/venting post so...beware.

I would like to know what makes people so insecure that they need to take something that is personal and sensitive to another person and throw it in their face just to make themselves feel better. I mean seriously...taking people's problems or weaknesses or even just personal issues and using them just because you don't have anything better to say is just really low. What ever happened to "Hey...nice to talk to you" or "How's it going?". Even if you think you are being funny and think that it should be taken as a joke...chances are the other person probably won't take it that way. There is a difference between being sarcastic and being downright hurtful. Maybe if it was total strangers it would be one thing....you could just chalk it up to they don't know any better, but when it's your own family....thats what makes it so sad.

Concert

Andy was nice enough to go with me to the Death Cab for Cutie concert last night. He was not real thrilled because it was ten THOUSAND degrees outside, but being the wonderful husband that he is he went anyways and we had a great time. Aside from the brief realization that our future might be in some weird hands, it was a great concert and we had a good night.

New Toy!!

I have been waiting forever to get this camera and I finally got it! I am so excited about my new toy! I feel sorry for anyone that has to spend more than 5 minutes with me though! If they thought I was bad about taking lots of pictures before....hide while you can.

Spur of the Moment

On the spur of the moment Andy and I decided to get away. We went down to this resort in Tucson for the night. It was incredible. Turns out they were filming a movie there at the same time, so we did a little star-stalking. Didn't get to see anyone famous though. Just a bunch of production assistants and trailers. It was still cool. Andy's sister, brother-in-law and niece and nephews came over to go swimming with us. It was a good night!

Lesson Learned...

Tonight I went out with some friends for dinner to Texas Roadhouse. We have been planning this dinner all week, since the one friend went on maternity leave on Monday and we haven't seen her all week. We had already discussed what we wanted to order (Yes...that might sound lame to some...but we enjoyed it) and we were all very excited for this. So we got to the restaurant and after waiting 45 minutes for a table were finally ready to order this food that we had planned all week for. You should of seen the look on the face of our waitress when three girls ordered not one...but two major appetizers, 3 baskets of rolls and then full entrees complete with huge salads and loaded mashed potatoes as the sides. However, our plan backfired because by the time we had eaten through half of the potato skins and onion blossom we were starting to feel queasy. When the waitress finally brought our meals, we all just asked for to-go boxes. Lesson learned...Don't plan a meal a week in advance because you will clearly order too much and feel totally sick to your stomach afterwards. However, Andy was happy with the huge to-go box of chicken, potato skins and steak fries that I brought home with me.

5 Years Ago.....

5 years ago today Andy proposed. And six years to the day that we "started dating". I can't believe that it has been that long!! I really can't believe that we've almost been married 5 years! We're so old!!! It's been a great 6 years! Andy is an amazing person and I love him!!
