I love a movie that makes you think, makes you feel
and inspires you to do better.
Andy and I watched this movie today (apparently a requirement for becoming a member of the Kilgrow family...although this was 7 years too late for Andy) and not to get overly sentimental, but there are so many aspects of this movie that can be applied to life.
To make a long story short the story is about 2 British sprinters wanting to compete in the 1924 Olympics. One named Eric Liddell runs because he believes that God gave him the ability to run and to show he is thankful he will run his very best. However, one of his heats is on a Sunday and he will not compete on a Sunday. The British Olympic committee and even the Prince of Wales try to convince him to compete. They bring up loyalty to country and how if there was ever a time to be loyal this was it. To this he simply replies, "Sir, God knows I love my country. But I can't make that sacrifice."
He drops out of that race, but goes on to win 2 other Olympic medals.
What an amazing show of character and faith.
"I want to compare faith to running in a race. It's hard. It requires concentration of will, energy of soul. You experience elation when the winner breaks the tape - but how long does that last? I would like to give you something more permanent, but I can only point the way. I have no formula for winning the race. Everyone runs in her own way, or his own way. And where does the power come from, to see the race to its end? If you commit yourself to the love of Christ, then that is how you run a straight race."
